The best way to fux your Firefox

Davide's picture

How do you get Firefox to allocate over 400MB on a 1GB machine ?

Simple:

  • Go visit Picasa Web Albums
  • Pick an album with many pictures, and...
  • browse, browse, browse, browse...

Bullshit !!!

The title of the video though also refers to a "culo" = ass 8)
Funny that in Italian "culo rotto" (broken ass) is actually also is used to describe a very lucky person !!

maybe its because if you

maybe its because if you fall then you are lucky if you land on your ass?

tabs

open 1500 tabs at once (from bookmarks). It actually still worked with just around 1000. I have 3.12 (4) GB ram tho

Wow, you've time to browse

Wow, you've time to browse pictures? I thought you were busy coding? 8P Firefox works great when you use it for coding related tasks. ;-)

Yeah yeah yeah.. but one

Yeah yeah yeah.. but one also has to try other things to get an idea of what to code next 8P

I couldn't get it to crash

brian's picture

How did you do it? I've browsed and browsed and browsed for a while but it looks just fine.

What I said is that it ate

Davide's picture

What I said is that it ate over 400MB (453 I think) of memory out of my 1GB.
I didn't talk about crash.. it just fucks up: to me, when almost half of the memory is taken by an application that is showing me a page with 1MB of content, it's a fuckup !

For every page firefox uses

For every page firefox uses 4 mb of memory just to keep ip open.
There is some memory spent also keeping some of the pages in the history cache in case you want to go back and forth.

Ciaps.

Cache My Life

Davide's picture

But when I eventually leave just one tab open, wouldn't it be nice if FF would give me back a couple of hundreds of megabytes ? 8)

about:config And then google

about:config

And then google for the various keys related to memory and tabs.

Squarauuusss!!!

I tried that before.. and it

Davide's picture

I tried that before.. and it didn't seem to help so much. Also settings tend to change between revisions.
It's claimed that the caching is not so bad but that's bullshit. The thing does not cache just 8 pages (though the article is from 2006).
I think that there is a great chance that Firefox has huge leaks. In general, pictures loaded with JavaScript seem to take space forever. I noticed that with my web cam a couple of years ago, and now It's interesting to see how the same happens with PicasaWeb.. which basically is the same thing: pictures loaded with JavaScript.

I'm a supporter of Firefox, but when I push it to someone I also have to add: "remember close all windows from time to time !".
Not only the thing can take half of your RAM, but the browsing also becomes sluggish.
The thing is that FF has all those add-ons, and some of them becomes so important that one can't just go back to IE or move to Opera.
I suspect that in the future IE or Opera may have to implement the same pluging system if the want to survive.. though FF's plugin system is more like an Operative System 8)

hhhmmmm.... i never used

hhhmmmm....
i never used firefox!
