Food at GDC 2008

Same crappy sandwiches as last year.
I just coughed and felt like the shit was coming up out of my mouth...
Yesterday for lunch I went to this "Lori's Diner" in downtown. Supposed to be famous, pretty crappy indeed.
The floor was filthy, the service non-existent: the waitress didn't acknowledge us as we got in. Didn't bother to give extra silverware as the table had only 2 sets and we were a party of 3.
She gave us the burgers in a hurry and disappeared, other people went to pick up their orders from the cook 8)
The all-Mexican staff off duty kept playing around. One guy was counting money on a table and some other coworker jumping around, actually standing on the sofa with his shoes on at once.
Also, funny how the waitress on the check wrote "service not included" below the amount.. as to demand for a tip.
It was $29, we gave her $32. A 10% tip ought to be enough for a service that actually deserved a -10% tip !
The burgers were average to insipid. Do not go to "Lori's Diner", it stinks big time !!
In the evening however, we had crab for dinner (company dinner). Pretty good, and so was the service ..though a cleaner managed to drop some crab on the boss of my boss 8)

I always wonder how iPolite
I always wonder how iPolite you are. Getting screwed with lunch and still giving a tip is an encouragement for people to stay lazy and to treat you next time like a garbage. If you were not satisfied with the service and you found a note saying "Service not included" you should rather write "It wasn't included indeed" and value it at $0.00.
I'm not going back and I'm
I'm not going back and I'm doing bad publicity to the place. That is worse than not giving a tip.
I was taking care of paying as my coworkers didn't exactly know how it works here and, considering that not giving a tip it's a negative statement, I didn't feel like involving my colleagues/friends too much, especially because it was mostly me that complained, while they thought that maybe it was normal to have such a bad service in America (it's not).
Finally, the tip given was sub-standard.
There is no such thing as
There is no such thing as doing a bad publicity on kazzuya.com because all 10 people that read this page do not go to this restaurant anyway. Direct punishment to the people providing bad service is much better solution. Also by this you could give an example to your coworkers how they should behave if they do not get correct thing for the money they spend.
Pondering wise man
If you think I'm naive for hoping to make a difference with this site, then imagine trying to "give a lesson" to someone that runs a shit business for who knows how long...
Those people don't give a crap about customers' opinion, otherwise their customer service wouldn't be so crappy !
Getting pissed and complaining right there was an option I considered, but in the end I figured that I was only going to upset myself and the people with me.. possibly making them think that I was an ass (as they didn't know what's the expected standard in the country, r maybe they just didn't care to complain openly).
Anyhow, it's not impossible that someone looking for this diner would find this blog entry with a web search. And if I get anyone not to go there it will be already less money for the business than I could have possibly have kept form the business with a $0 tip 8)
..or maybe people will just want to go there to see how bad it is.. which would be cool somehow 8)
You still do not have a firm
You still do not have a firm grasp on keigo rules: given the fact that the place was crappy, you should have apologized deeply to your colleagues. :)
Ciaps.
They took me there and one
They took me there and one of the colleagues wasn't Japanese anyway 8)
Still I felt obligated to let them know that that kind of service doesn't reflect the American quality. Perhaps closer to the Italian quality ;)
Oh sad ... How did you end
Oh sad ... How did you end up there? Might have been better off going to McDonald's or KFC. 8P I've never been to that place, but from my experiences it's typically "normal". The I suppose Lori's is probably better than what they generally serve at those conferences ... Maybe next time (if it's not too far) you guys should to be Red Robbin's or T.G.I. Friday's or Outback Steakhouse or something ... ?
It looks like you'll be visiting the gym upon your return, eh? 8P
The Anti-Johnny Rockets
The pace loosely copies Johnny Rockets, but the service is diametrically opposed.
At Johnny Rockets, waitresses are jolly actors, almost to the point of getting annoying (some people say Japanese customer service seems too fake, but I'm not sure that American customer service is anymore "true", with all that buddy-buddy smalltalk one has to go through).
And yeah.. I'm getting facking fat !!!!
Just took a look at the
Just took a look at the picture of the food in those photos ... seems like the gym will be awaiting your return. 8P
Mr. ThePomy ? (service comment)
Will you drop me an email, or am I supposed to use my psychic powers ? ;)
My email is dpasca at gmail...
zzzzzzzz !!!

Hey Kaz, I've sent u an email, I had some flu and I'm back at work today! :P
service, tips
I never give tips in my area anymore (balearic islands, spain). Good service is totally inexistent and quality down the floor. My mother often argues as to why I don't leave any, saying it's totally unrespectful bla bla bla.. I think the outrageously expensive food is way enough.
On the contrary, both times I've been to Japan, I've left tips sometimes, even though it's not the norm at all (you are not suposed to give tips). Most times it was to taxi drivers. One time in Kyoto, we wouldn't find the ryokan (hostel) and our map sucked, so the taxi driver had a hard time trying to find it (no GPS in kyoto taxis and barely and road signs, it's even worse than tokyo to find a place); after a few minutes (it was very close from where we took the taxi) we arrived to an area that looked like the right place, but still couldn't find it, so the taxi driver, some guy in his 60's, parked the car and ran over the small streets under the SNOW asking the locals about the place, then he finally found it and drove us there.
Needless to say we gave him a few hundred yens tip, I would have felt really bad not doing so otherwise.
That's a big difference from spain and japan.
Spain: horrendous service with no manners, ultra expensive, tips are encouraged
Japan: extremelly great service with the utmost respect, cheap (in comparison), no tips encouraged
Jonny Rockets!!! What a
Jonny Rockets!!! What a wonderful place... You feel inside an Happy Days episode, and burgers and fries are not so bad...
Aaahh... good days in the US....
