iMac too !! ..English
Here is the English version of my previous post...
So I simply got pissed at my Vaio and Sony Vegas for screwing a video project up.
I spent a week on it and last time I went loading it, somehow it kept trying to allocate tons of memory, reread all source files.. some sort of nightmare.
I didn't pretend a Mac would have solved my current problem but I was just fed with PC and how it is. Especially Sony Vaio, looks great, but it's a Frankenstine machine. Meaning, that it just looks goofy with all that BS added software and how nightmarish it is with the drivers, especially if one tries to install English OS on the Japanese version.
I think Windows is doomed. Now that Apple has such a stronghold with iPod and that has great hardware and a solid OS, there is really no reason why the mix & match PC approach should last too long.
Most people just want things to work and thought Mac surely does break, Windows and PC hardware it's so messy that it just breaks by default.
Problems I already encountered with Mac are:
- Japanese named files on the NAS don't display correctly (apparently this is a problem that came up only with recent versions of OS X, which does things "properly" but it would be nice if it adapted to those that live in a Shift-JIS encoding world)
- Keyboard shortcuts: "Home" and "End" act weird. Thought there seems to be a solution (isn't working for me !))or I could try to the Mac equivalent: Command + arrow keys
- Japanese input, it's a bit less sophisticated when compared to the one in Windows
- iMovie doesn't seem to like the MPEG-2 files coming out of my Sony camcorder.. ouch ! So much for the video editing issues 8)
Other than that OS X looks great. And I look facking tired and sweaty as I carried the huge 24 inches package all the way home from Shibuya (with help from the train of course 8)

But are you going to install
But are you going to install Windows XP or do you plan to use the crappy OSX???
what is the dog doing
what is the dog doing sitting on top of the box?
It's a reminder that it
It's a reminder that it needs a new battery and that somebody else is supposed to call AIBO clinic to order it... with some effort I could do it, but somebody else promised to do it !
But mostly it was a way to show how hardware needs to meet software and be packaged to an actual user friendly product.
There are a lot of robots out there, but none comes close to the AIBO system.. the hardware, the presentation, the design. It's like Mac vs the messy PC world.
And the idiot that killed AIBO at Sony obviously didn't mean to keep the company afloat. Good luck with PS3 ! (NOT !)
hey, ps3 is cool, just a bit
hey, ps3 is cool, just a bit misunderstood at the moment! Also I never had a Mac, but somehow I dont think the problem is in the hardware... there are just bullshit people writing bullshit code to suit other bullshit peoples needs. So if you have no tolerance to bullshit you will have a problem no matter what hardware you use.
Indeed the PS3 problem is
Indeed the PS3 problem is about misunderstanding.. about what Sony wanted people to buy and at what price, etc etc.
As for the Mac.. hardware is surely one issue with PC. It's hard to put together something that works well without various compatibility and noise issues.. let alone something that doesn't look like an air conditioner.
However the real issue is the mix of hardware and software. The drivers hell, the DLLs hell, the issues about using multiple languages, the various versions of vista: home, pro, elite, whatever else.
Sony tries to do something by bundling its software with Vaio.. but Sony is no OS developer. They bundle a load of crap on new PCs and one has to carefully go and disable/uninstall all that stuff.
I am wating for the "Mac
I am wating for the "Mac sucks" post in a few weeks.... =)
"facking mac!!! on the pc if you want you can buy and install a new card and you have....
on this facking mac i am stuck with...... i cant do ..... fack fack fack!!"
I'm already having more than
I'm already having more than one trouble.
But, overall I still Windows PCs are doomed !
"Doomed" is a big word!! =)
"Doomed" is a big word!! =)
Then it's Quaked 8P
Then it's Quaked 8P
Too many PCs out there and
Too many PCs out there and too much software written for them and too many people relying on their PCs + software to just one day decide that the whole PC industry is doomed. Also there isnt really a clear alternative, since there is no other HW/Software combination that one can switch to and resolve all the issues. So whether we like it or not, PCs and flaky PC software is still going to be with us for a very long time....
You said it right.. too many
You said it right.. too many PC and too much software.
Too many combinations, viruses, issues, half-solutions.. and Windows doesn't seem to have a real direction.
The same way people buy iPods and iPhones, they will buy Macs..
There is no reason for personal computers being more complicated than they need to be.
Nowadays the real issue is with file formats.. Office, but that is on Mac too.
Also a lot of work can and is being shifted towards the web thanks to JavaScript and in part Firefox that is a platform more than a browser.
Also current Macs can run Windows in parallel (with an emulator) in case one really needs a specific application, without having to commit fully to Windows.
The software industry is not doomed.. because the most popular software is already on Mac. In fact, Photoshop itself once used to be for Mac(intosh) only 8)
I am not a Mac or a PC
I am not a Mac or a PC supporter since I am not a power user and dont really use any of the 'advanced' features. I probably change a system setting somewhere once a month, so maybe thats why I really have no issues with PC or windows.
But the computer games industry is of main concern to me, since I need to have the development skills and we still do PC versions for almost every game, but Mac versions are very rare. In fact computer game wbesites like gamespot etc... dont even have a search option for Mac games. And I dont see that changing anytime soon.
One that wants to edit some
One that wants to edit some video or make a photo album shouldn't be a power user.
As for PC gamers, I consider those to be the actual so called "power users". Men that tune their PC like a car, that know the latest graphics card out there, etc etc.
It's a big chunk of people that can't be possibly be left out.
I think that Mac will catch up with games eventually.. if there are enough users out there.. but it can't possibly attract the "car tuning" power users types because those actually enjoy fixing their PCs 8)
However, I'm assuming that nowadays most computer users out there aren't interested in playing the latest FPS games.
In any case, next MacOS will natively allow for people to reboot into Windows through Boot Camp.
So that Windows can become the games' OS.. 8)
cool cool, we will wait for
cool cool, we will wait for that, until then we stay with the PC.
what does Mac use for graphics api right now? is it openGL?
have you tried doing any programming on the Mac yet?
what compiler do you use?
OSX is cool
Programming on OS X is cool. The X-Code toolkit is great and even using Objective-C starts making sense after some time. For graphics it is plain OpenGL and native API is Unix. Grphical API, so called Cocoa makes a lot of sense in many cases (it is derived in straight line from NeXT, so it is nothing new).
In general programming on OS X compared to Windows is comfortable and clean. WindowsAPI is definitely the worst nightmare ever created but on the other side it is the most popular. AmigaOS API was probably the best one I have seen in my life, but then... it is gone forever :)
Oh, and for compiling you get almost standard gcc compiler. X-Code is just rapid application development environment. It has only much worse text editor than Visual Studio that I am very used to.
Crappy OSX will do ;)
Crappy OSX will do ;)
OSX SUX

And google is filling your blog with mac-related adwords... :-P
..and you are certainly
..and you are certainly contributing to that ;)
Maybe you could try writing OS>< instead ! eheh
Dovevi postà una foto delle
Dovevi postà una foto delle pezze pure di quando hai comprato la lavatrice, allora!
No, quella me la portatono
No, quella me la portatono col carico da sopra !!
your fault anyway.
you bought a vaio, what did you expect?
I've heard that excuse
I've heard that excuse before.. it's the user's fault when the computer craps, it's the programmer's fault when C++ bogs down.
Assuming that free will exists, it's ultimately my fault for everything I do in life.. then I can blame myself to death or I can move on and change things drastically ;)
Laptops are bound to have peculiar hardware. But standard PCs themselves are a pain to maintain, hardware and software-wise.
Vaio only makes it a bit worse.. though Vaio is a laptop worth buying, almost all other laptops are bulky, or ugly or both.
OSes
I gotta say that Macs and PCs both have their good and bad points... and although the PC is my main system (Gaming largely) running 64bit XP (don't like vista much at the moment but I want 64bit apps) I do like the Mac approach...
Macs have a simple to use front end, it's pretty, there's none of this messing around trying to get things to work properly 'cause it's ALL apple stuff. Maybe if Microsoft made PCs it would help matters (I hope they don't read ths and gain further monopoly over the tech markets)
All in all though, my favourite machine at the moment has to be my AmigaOne. It's fast, it's simple, it works well (OK, so it was only developer pre-release boards and there's 1 or 2 hardware bugs).
It's an old fasioned way of doing things, one where the user can just DO and not have to wait... If you ever used a Commodore Amiga back in the day then this is bascially an Amiga for the present. New hardware, updated OS, damn fast...
If you wanna read more about it this is the best place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amigaone (and follow related links)
Now.. there is a point to all this... I'm basically trying to show that what companies seem to have forgotten is that the user wants to get things done quickly and efficiently without all this messing around. Looking at overall machine speed over the years, operating systems are getting more and more bloated and taking ages to even boot. (AmigaOne booting to AmigaOS4 takes approx 15 seconds from the push of the power button to a fully loaded and usable desktop) When they finally do they take ags to load programs or do much at all. Come on all, back to basics. It's an operating system! It's meant to operate the computer, not consume all the resources before you start! Think!
Sorry for the big rant about that, it just annoys me sometimes...
Amigaone ?! You are hardcore
Amigaone ?!
You are hardcore 8)
Amiga was great.. but I left it as soon as I realized that it wasn't going to evolve graphically... stuck with bit-planes when I wanted to do Gouraud shading 8)
Luckily Apple is now using mostly standard PC hardware.
Yeah, was a large downfall
Yeah, was a large downfall of the amiga sticking with bitplanes and such... At least the next gen amigas (AmigaOnes) are all using proper RTG systems now and any bitplane stuff just gets converted to chunky for compatibility :)
