Information Technology.. ? Not for italians!

brian's picture

Hi there,

I recently started a new extra job for summer in a hotel, at the reception desk. One of my tasks overnight is entering the details of all the new people that arrived that day into a database, their name.. passport number.. issue date... address etc. We use an application that gets the data from scanning the passports, ID cards etc, mostly by recognizing the data in the lower area of the card, those characters like >>>NAME>>789789>879789 etc.

Passports and ID cards all have it... wait... except Italian ID cards !
We get a lot of italian customers and they only bring their ID card.

So what's the problem with italians? See this picture, this is a 2003 issued italian ID card (2007 ones are just the same). A lame piece of paper with the picture stamped on and typed in with those old typing machines. I don't know if this is the current ID card for italy, but so far all the italians that came to the hotel since May (maybe ~500) had this (they didn't bring a passport, just that ID card).

It doesn't have any of the data for automatic scanning etc, unlike the rest of the world, so I have to type in all the details by hand. That takes around 5 times longer than it does by scan. So I wonder, how can a western european country still use such crap..
Being the way I am, trying to automate all I can and use the available technology to the best extent, it pisses me beyond belief that italians still use that crap.

(Note, I don't hate italians or anything, and this post doesn't mean any hatred towards them, it's just a fact about their ID cards!)

Wow, attaching the picture

Wow, attaching the picture with metal clamps? thats pretty antiquated.

Even in south africa they are now using credit card type ID the same as the USA drivers license.

Facking Italy ! Speaking of

Facking Italy !

Speaking of attachments.. it seems that Mr.Brian here also had some issues with attaching pictures.
First my site wouldn't allow to upload pictures (facking Web), and now the pictures are too big for the site layout (facking facking).

cool

Well, some arguments for you

Well, some arguments for you to think about:

1) A lot of Italians use ID cards because they are accepted all over Europe and also in some extra-EU countries
2) A lot of Italians do not have a passport at all because they can use the national ID card
3) The passport is subject to extra taxation by the Italian government (the taxation on ID cards has been scrapped thanks to a decision of the European parliament) and if you do not go outside of Europe you just waste money
4) The lame piece of paper cannot be counterfeited because of the fine prints, the watermarks and engraved stamp and so on
5) Technically is is machine readable thanks to the rectangle on the lower left on the back

Of course a passport raises less "suspects" because of the writings in three languages and it is widely recognized, anyway the hassle to replace a lost passport is so high that the national ID card is always a better alternative (7/14 days to replace a passpoort, 15 minutes to replace a national ID card, not to mention the stamp duty: 120eur for the passport, 10 for the national ID card).

Regards

My point is not that they

brian's picture

My point is not that they don't bring a passport, it's their ID card sucks. All others (from civilized countries at least), have proper printing at the right places and the data at the bottom just like passports, those characters like ">>>>>>NAME>>SURNAME>>878979>/(/8789" etc

In a couple of years you

In a couple of years you should finally see plastic ID cards with the machine readable string at the bottom.

But do not hold your breath because those IDs were "experimental" 3 years ago and never finalized because the stupid idea is that they should incorporate also other functions such as medial records, digital signature and other two or three that I do not remember.

The problem is that you need a certification authority for the digital signature, the medical records would overlap with some other card and so on. If the government does not decide to scrap the additional features and give the people just an ID card, you will have to wait and wait and wait...

Ciao.

Well, Spain is a well

brian's picture

Well, Spain is a well underdeveloped country in comparison with most other western european ones, and my ID card has had that extra info in a proper plastic small card since my first.. which was like 13 years ago.

Unfortunately we are afraid

Unfortunately we are afraid of changing things and while other countries evolves we still debate over features, drawbacks and so on.

The crazy thing is that we are waiting for modern plastic ID cards, but we already have plastic driving licenses (that are not valid as IDs).

Ciao.

Thank you Mr. Freddy for
