iPod Touch: I got it 8)

Davide's picture

Actually I got one 3 weeks ago or so.
It's great but it has some drawbacks:

Cons

* iTunes is even less intuitive now. With the main list, then the iPods' list and the tabs for movies, etc etc

* The front is very resistant but I already got some minor scratched on the back. Hopefully I can "clean" them up and then stick some self-adhesive film (only on the back)

* Controls are a bit too simple: one accidentally goes out from video viewer and then has to go back and scroll the list to find again the one he was watching (not easy with series and so on !)

* I really miss the scroll-wheel ! I often listen two two hours radio shows and its very hard to seek to the right place. Same gos with 20 minutes video clips.

Pros

* I don't use much the keyboard but it's not so bad. I could actually manage to type well after a few drinks, which makes me believe that Apple does test its things with non-sober people. Something that I believe everyone should do 8)

* It's the coolest gadget in town, really neat and girls dig it !!

* The web-browser is really nice, but has no Flash (minus ?) nor Java support (can't run my ancient racing "game" 8( )

...well, the SDK will be out in February and I think people will be able to code in OpenGL ES for it, which is really nice !

Safari automatically opens PDF files. The screen is a bit small to read comfortably however the real issue is that one has to be online to read those PDF ! They can't be sync-ed with iTunes 8(
Hopefully that will be fixed someday. Some people have hacked the Touch and installed a web server to run locally for this purpose, but I'm definitely not that desperate 8)

Anyhow, a cool gadget that helps spending time on daily commuters, and hopefully also on my future air travels. Monitors on airplanes suck and sometimes you don't even get those 8(

wooooooo

Aahh, kazzipod... I've tried

Aahh, kazzipod... I've tried an iPod Touch at the mall and indeed it is cool, but I couldn't check the keyboard, which I believe(d) to be its weakest point.

Next time I'll play with one, I'll try to be less sober as you suggest!

And now both of you tell me:

And now both of you tell me: Why the hell do you need keyboard on iPod?!?!?

For the browser, for

For the browser, for instance?

keyboard is not cool enough,

keyboard is not cool enough, i think you need speech recognition!

And you browse internet on

Duddie's picture

And you browse internet on iPod? I mean, if you have access to WLAN then for sure there is notebook or desktop handy and nobody needs to use so small screen to browse net. If it was with GSM/GPRS whatever maybe that would make sense. Sorry, I do not buy it... :)

one word for you: bathroom !

What about that 'blackberry'

What about that 'blackberry' or whatever its called?

I think it's only for USA

Davide's picture

I think it's only for USA and Canada.
Japan went straight to email on cellphones, so no real need to have a separate device.

well it has a built in

well it has a built in keyboard for web browsing, etc.... kind of what you want to do with your iPod?

I'm not big at browsing on

Davide's picture

I'm not big at browsing on mobile devices, but in any case, one usually doesn't need to type that much, so the virtual keyboard is ok.
To me the iPod Touch is still mostly an MP3 player.. that can do video too.
