Money and fame on the web
Since I've been playing around with AdSense, I've been thinking about web sites
popoularity.
If I wanted to render this site more popoular I'd have to sell out its soul,
more or less.
There was never too much real effort towards popoularizing kazzuya.com. At some
point I tried to post some "cool news" but it didn't feel right.
Posting news is the easiest way to draw traffic. One doesn't really have to do
much other than selecting interesting stuff left and right without even writing
personal thoughts about it.
The news thing works if more than one person is active. With 5-6 people copying
and pasting some text with some links , one can get a continuous stream of news
that are likely to make people come back.. however, in the RSS feeds era, it's
possible that too many news will overload people and have them unlink the site.
Re-shuffling news would make me feel guilty though. Guilty of trying to hook
people to read random bullshit, to waste time to stay "informed" rather than
being active developing something !
It's also worth noting that:

A big chunk of people come from Japan to play JavaKazRace and to get the PS1
GPU plug-in, however, most Japanese don't read English good enough to enjoy
it, so that cuts them off. -
I write updates in English but I'm not close to native English speakers. I'm
no dude or lad. I'm definitely not in sync with sites such as Digg or
Slashdot, I could never fake to be American, that would be dumb ! -
If I wrote in Italian it would be much easier to be popoular.
"Look at me ! I'm a game developer working
in Japan and I'm Italian !!". I'd be the hot cake for nothing.. the
normal guy that enrolls into the Special Olympics, and, most importantly I'd
cut off most of my friends !!!
If this site suddenly became popoular, I'd be surprised and perhaps worried..
appealing to the average Joe.. a scary thought ! Or maybe not.. after all there
are many people out there that like the things I like.. ummm !

POP!
Usually becoming a POPular Star means turning into mass market audience. Since the mass market is less demanding than a few selected individuals then the quality must go down. However, this is always a big question for me, because usually you need to look a things from different perspective:
"Hey people, eat shit because billions flies cannot be wrong!" - this is usually a point of view reflected by people who deny giving pop-culture status of culture. However, is this point right? I am not sure. More like anarchism thing in the sense of "I want to be different because dumb masses like it". But then, is pop-culture any valuable from other side? 1. Music: Is Britney Spears a crap? Millions listen to her... some people will say she is crap. But then is Beatless music crap? They sold even more...
2. Movies: Are the Hollywood productions garbage? They make millions with millions of audience with a garbage movies. But from time to time they also produce some masterpiece and it also brings millions in revenues...
Therefore you never know what is really a part of popular culture and where is the quality culture... so to give you advice: fill the page with popular shit that brings millions because sometimes you can pass very valuable ideas to those millions coming for junk :)
Just don't write in Italian :)

But seriously, that anti-gun post was a clear illustration how easy it is for people to strongly state their beliefs on the internet as long as no real action is required and there are no real consequences attached. =)

You know, last we met on IRC it was on #italia2 and not on #italia... partially because I relented the "ownership" of the channel to some amazing (sarcasm) hackers.
I also left Italy when I realized that I didn't like my own country (not entirely though). So I guess my policy in a sense is "live and let die", but from a (relatively) safe place far away I like to hint my thoughts.
If USA were my states, and if I were actually tied to any of them, then I would actively and constantly try to persuade people to avoid guns.
When I think how USA managed to demonize cigarettes I think that the country can do great things. ...but it takes time to change things that are tied to a whole culture. Removing guns also takes time.. it's not my battle.. I like to criticize, but I can't really enforce anything, nor it would be fair for me to do that since I can't prove that I'm that much smarter, let alone that I'm that much "right".

You came out very strongly against guns in that post. And then suddenly you became aware that google ads started advertsing guns on your website. If it cost you nothing to click on a button and disable those ads, you would've done it right away.
The fact that you didnt do it is not because you are not sure if you are right or not, but becasue disabling those ads required some extra cost or effort from you. And you are not ready to spend that effort =)

As I said, it's not matter of one click. I cannot selectively disable ads unless I know the exact URL. Last week I made $2 with Google Ads. That's 28c per day..
I guess I could have removed the ads altogether.. but the message I delivered on the blog far outweighs the remote possibility that someone may actually click on some guns ad, let alone to proceed purchasing a gun from it.
If that made me 0.00001% dirty, so be it, I don't plan on being perfect..

I dont know... What would you do if you saw a website that delivers a message against smoking and at the same time advertises cigarettes? In a way it is actually kind of funny. And will definitely take away from the strength of the message in my opinion.
Anyway, I think no matter what you say here, I know that we do share some common beliefs and that you do see the point I am making. =)

If you actually have the patience to sit through the intro (you might have to install latest version of flash too), then you will see that it is basically javakazrace in black and white with a lot of bullshit running at very slow fps on my dual athlon processor with a 7800 gtx card....

There is actually one Flash/Shockwave game going 60 FPS ! It's called Rich Racer. The car swining around is distracting though.
I think I could also get my game to go 60fps.. actually I'm supposedly limiting the framerate to 30fps but Java timer sucks big time and it becomes about 45-47fps on my computer !
