Mr.Manager

This week is pretty busy at work.
I need to prepare a presentation for Friday. In this presentation I'll have to report to the group on current and near future work for my team.

Then I have to dish out some plan for a year-long project. I started today and, well, I didn't even know what software to use ! Eventually I settled for GanttProject as most people seem to dislike MS Project.. but GanttProject does have a few bugs and the features seem to be lacking. It's pretty good, but still.. I would like at least to custom color the background of the columns for example..

Anyhow it's interesting to schedule projects. In this case there is a lot of wild guessing to do. So, I take the outline (divided by year's quarters) from my boss and I progressively add more details in a hierarchical fashion.
Many details will be missing, some things will require more time, some less time but still, if you don't at least try to plan things, they may never get done 8)

Another thing I have to do this week, well for tomorrow, it's a new attempt to study math in our group. It's mostly going to be useful for those that aren't programmers (but certainly also always for programmers as well !) but because it's in Japanese for me it's mostly a Japanese language study.
In fact this time the appointed "teachers" are me and a Japanese colleague. My role for now is to translate the terms in English by tomorrow (almost 1 AM here !) and then work in concert with the coworker to somehow teach math+English+Japanese depending on the individuals 8)

yeah, planning can be

yeah, planning can be cool.

i remember when i was working on projects for the military, we had to write these really thick planning documents covering work till the end of the project. so the 1st 3-4 months was just planning and writing documentation without any coding.

of course as real work commences you start seeing oversights and problems with the initial planning and a lot of things change. but at least it gives you a high level overview of what's to be done and how different components of the project interact with each other.

..right, and now let me

Thanks kazzoman for the

Thanks kazzoman for the GanttProject heads-up, in fact I was struggling with crappy MS Project and maybe I'll be more lucky this time.. or eventually I'll just realize that I simply don't know how to manage projects! ;)

I dunno.. GanttProject is

I dunno.. GanttProject is pretty slow with horizontal scrolling.. and it has no scrollbar for that !
That alone is quite a drawback... we'll see in a couple of days when the new PC comes.. Penryn quad core with nvidia 8800.. maybe I'll get a decent scrolling speed with that 8)

Humm doesn't seem slow to

Humm doesn't seem slow to me... actually dragging the pane feels better than using the scrollbar on MS Project and, if you need to get a broader view, just zoom out, no?

Besides, GanttProject looks like a stripped-down version of MS Project in the end, but the HTML export is a few thousand times better so maybe I could use it for that feature... we'll see!

Or maybe not!

hhhmmm quadcore with latest

hhhmmm quadcore with latest gfx chip just to have fast 2d scrolling..... cool!! =)

Climbing social ladder!!! 1.

Climbing social ladder!!!

WOO!

PS. PowerPoint and Gantt charts seem to cast a shadow on TrainzDramas(TM)!!!! And meanwhile people in Tokyo make "human accidents" and cause delays!

I like this part:
"The authorities are completely unsentimental about the delays these suicides can cause. Relatives are often presented with a bill for the cost of the cleanup and delays that the inconvenient death has caused."

well if some psychologically

well if some psychologically messed up, complete stranger goes and kills himself in my living room and makes a big mess. fack that, i will send a cleaning bill to his family too!!!!

go kill yourself somewhere else mf!!!

But I did not question this

Duddie's picture

But I did not question this method. I actually consider this CORRECT. Actually the penalty for family for growing up criminals, psychos, etc, should be really high. Maybe finally parents would find time for kids.

Make it difficult !

I think the idea is also that a potentially suicidal person wouldn't want to leave the monetary burden to the family.. though someone that hates his/her own family might want to use that against them 8)

In general, this way one may think twice before jumping..
