Opera, bha...
Opera Software, the makers of Opera internet browser, is convincing EU commissioners that Microsoft is bad, bad again because they put IE together with Windows. I am not a big M$ fan and I do consider IE to be one of the worst browsers. But what Opera Software demands from EU is sick. They just asked to have Microsoft not remove IE from Windows, but rather package it together with other browsers to give them competitive edge. Are those guys sick or what?
Maybe every maker of calculator, every maker of text editor and every maker of clock software should have right to include their piece of work together with Windows? Why not... just free distribution for everyone because Microsoft will have to pay for it.
Opera Software do not realize that they sell a commercial product and they should be able to compete with others the same way as shoemakers do compete with each other. Recently I have bough a mobile phone and I got a free pair of slippers with it. Should Nike or Ecco shoemakers sue my phone dealer because he did not bundle demo version of their shoes together with my phone?
Or maybe I am wrong? Maybe Opera Software wants to deliver a free fully functional version of their browser to all users of Windows?

You are right indeed,
You are right indeed, sir!
By the way I was thinking about Microsoft's software that comes packaged with Windows some time ago, a related topic.
It's definitely one of the weaknesses of Windows if you compare it to other Operating Systems' offerings (I'm thinking of Linux/Mac of course). What do you get with Windows? A crappy Notepad, a shitty Paint and that's it.. those applications haven't changed since Windows 95!
So, when you purchase Windows you don't really have anything that may allow you to actually get to work (or play or whatever) just out of the box! Except maybe browsing the net with a shitty browser, of course.
If you install any major Linux distribution these days, it comes with all the bells and whistles, a myriad of tools and powerful software packages such as OpenOffice! Even the Mac's offering is enough to get you started. But of course Microsoft just wants to sell you Office and so they do their best to keep Windows as "light" as possible.
Thanks to Microsoft we're still in the Stone Age of OS's, and most people don't even realize that!
You have raised another
You have raised another point that amazes me about M$. Paint, Notepad, Calculator... geez. Those things are even behind stone age. They have not improved them since Win 3.0 (I have not been touching earlier Windows, so I am not sure how old really those are). Those things are in the best case useless.
I am really amazed with Leopard and how little demanding and how useful a system out of the box can be. Also I like how iSteve promotes development of platform by offering XCode as a part of OS. While Microsoft maybe gives Visual Studio Express for free but if they did not then it would not hurt anyone. VS Express is just garbage that you even use M$ libs. Bha...
With Windows (especially Vista) you get tons of useless crap and an OS that is just slowed down to maximum because of this garbage around.
I have also heard that KDE 4 is supposed to be lighter, less demanding and in general heading into opposite direction than Vista. We will see...
Firefox 3 is also supposed to be less memory demanding than version 2. We will also see...
Meanwhile, I go back to freezing my ass (holidays in .pl).
The line between where OS
The line between where OS ends and applications start is somewhat blurry nowdays. In the days of DOS it was a lot more clear. You had your config.sys, autoxec.bat and a dos directory with some system tools.
Why for example should a web browser be even distributed with an OS? Is it because 99.9999% of computers are connected to the internet and web browsing is part of basic functionality that computers are expected to have?
But so, then why not include
But so, then why not include an Office suite as well? I assume that using Office Automation packages is also past of the basic functionalities that computers are expected to have!
You have Notepad!!! (and
You have Notepad!!! (and even Write!!!)
